Grey Stack is an edition of plates that use glazes designed to be perfect complementary colors; yellow on the undersides of the plates and purple on top. The two colors, when seen from a distance, reflect off of one another to appear to be an even chromatic grey. The plates were turned on the wheel-mounted mold, which affords them a machined regularity. The stack is placed on a pedestal with the bottom plate starting below eye level and the top plate located above eye level. As the stack is approached, the distinct colors of the plates become apparent (see detail images below). The grey glaze on the rim is an actual mixture of 50 percent yellow and 50 percent purple.
